Constitutional Lawyer, Prof. Ben Nwabueze, yesterday warned Ndigbo that boycotting the 2019 general elections would be a suicidal mistake. He gave the warning in a reaction to threat by the exiled leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) Nnamdi Kanu. The foremost lawyer, a staunch supporter of Kanu, had recently brokered peace between Ohaneze Ndigbo and IPOB members at his Atani home in Ogbaru Local Council Area. The elder statesman said in a terse statement that he had repeatedly advised against such move because of its implication on Ndigbo. He said: “My stand on the boycott of election is that it is a suicidal mistake. For this reason, I am totally opposed to it, and have repeatedly advised against it.” Nwabueze had been in the vanguard of calls for the restructuring of Nigeria, and had recently warned in an interview with a national newspaper, that Igbo presidency will be a mirage without a reform. He urged Ohaneze and IPOB to work together to forge a common front for the Igbo nation. According to him, leaders could only be relevant if they carry their people along, adding that Igbo people could not afford to be disunited at this crucial period in Nigeria.
He had also canvassed unity at a recent meeting at Atani which the President General of Ohaneze Ndigbo, Dr. Nnia Nwodo, Emeritus Dean of Church of Nigeria, Anglican Communion, Most Rev Maxwell Anikwenwa and counsel to IPOB, Mr. Aloy Ejimakor attended. “We will not be united if followers are disenchanted with the leadership,” he said. Meanwhile, Ohanaeze Ndigbo Youths Council (OYC) has alleged that a presidential candidate from southwest was plotting to distabilise the southeast ahead of the 2019 elections. In a statement by its leader Mazi Okechukwu Isiguzoro in Abakaliki, the group declared that it has adopted the joint ticket of Atiku Abubakar and Peter Obi, and warned those planning to cause trouble to stay away.

Ozil was not in the Arsenal squad, having missed the trip to Ukraine this week, and it was claimed by Arsenal sources that he had suffered a recurrence of a back spasm. Ozil had missed Arsenal's game at Fulham on October 7 because of a similar complaint. This fresh back spasm had occurred just days after Ozil was left as an unused substitute for the 2-1 win at Bournemouth. Asked repeatedly about Ozil in his post-match press conference at the Emirates, Emery said that Ozil "has back ache" when asked why he could not play. Asked when Ozil suffered this problem, Emery said that he "did not know". Then asked whether Ozil had even attended the game at the Emirates, Emery said he "did not know". Now fo...
governor of Akwa Ibom State and co-chairman of Pan Niger Delta Forum (PANDEF), Obong Victor Attah, has warned that Nigeria may break up unless fiscal federalism is instituted. Attah, who spoke on a private radio station in Uyo, the state capital, yesterday, said the only respite Nigeria has against its imminent disintegration would be to return to fiscal federalism as that remains the only solution to myriad of socio-economic problems besetting the nation. “Under a fiscal regime, as it were in the days of the regions, states, would contribute 50 percent of their resources to the central government and use 50 percent for development of their territories, such that multiplier effects would douse 90 percent of tensions in the country.” Attah, who was governor between 1999 and 2017, said Nigeria would have achieved more significant development if true fiscal federalism had been put in place, instead of what is obtained at the moment. The former chairman of the Nigeria Governors’ Forum d...
SPAIN'S High Court has called Catalan President Carles Puigdemont to testify later this week. The disposed leader is currently in Brussels and has consulted with a lawyer there. Earlier today Mr Puigdemont warned EU leaders they are facing the “end of the idea of Europe” if they fail to take action over Spain’s “violent and oppressive” response to its independence referendum. The court called for Mr Puigdemont along with 13 other members of his deposed administration to testify on Thursday at 9am (local time). Spain’s Attorney General Jose Manuel Maza filed a lawsuit against Mr Puigdemont on Monday, citing the crimes of rebellion, sedition and embezzlement and the Catalan President faces up to 30 years in prison. According to Spanish law, rebellion charges may apply to those who “violently and publicly” try to “abrogate, suspend or modify the Constitution, either totally or partially,” or “declare the independence of part of the national territory”. The crime of rebel...
