Constitutional Lawyer, Prof. Ben Nwabueze, yesterday warned Ndigbo that boycotting the 2019 general elections would be a suicidal mistake. He gave the warning in a reaction to threat by the exiled leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) Nnamdi Kanu. The foremost lawyer, a staunch supporter of Kanu, had recently brokered peace between Ohaneze Ndigbo and IPOB members at his Atani home in Ogbaru Local Council Area. The elder statesman said in a terse statement that he had repeatedly advised against such move because of its implication on Ndigbo. He said: “My stand on the boycott of election is that it is a suicidal mistake. For this reason, I am totally opposed to it, and have repeatedly advised against it.” Nwabueze had been in the vanguard of calls for the restructuring of Nigeria, and had recently warned in an interview with a national newspaper, that Igbo presidency will be a mirage without a reform. He urged Ohaneze and IPOB to work together to forge a common front for the Igbo nation. According to him, leaders could only be relevant if they carry their people along, adding that Igbo people could not afford to be disunited at this crucial period in Nigeria.
He had also canvassed unity at a recent meeting at Atani which the President General of Ohaneze Ndigbo, Dr. Nnia Nwodo, Emeritus Dean of Church of Nigeria, Anglican Communion, Most Rev Maxwell Anikwenwa and counsel to IPOB, Mr. Aloy Ejimakor attended. “We will not be united if followers are disenchanted with the leadership,” he said. Meanwhile, Ohanaeze Ndigbo Youths Council (OYC) has alleged that a presidential candidate from southwest was plotting to distabilise the southeast ahead of the 2019 elections. In a statement by its leader Mazi Okechukwu Isiguzoro in Abakaliki, the group declared that it has adopted the joint ticket of Atiku Abubakar and Peter Obi, and warned those planning to cause trouble to stay away.
The leadership of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) under Mazi Okwudili Ezenachukwu have warned other pro-Biafra groups against taking actions inimical to the Biafra struggle. This came at a time the IPOB under Mazi Nnamdi Kanu is engaging in war of words with Gov. Okezie Ikpeazu of Abia State, with the former reacting angrily after Gov. Ikpeazu said its leader lies a lot. However, the IPOB faction in a statement made available to DAILY POST, Thursday, said it was warning those claiming to be followers of the disappeared Mazi Nnamdi Kanu “to stop adhering and introducing inconsequential propagandas that are dangerous and meaningless to the holistic struggle for Biafra restoration.” IPOB has been facing leadership crisis since last year culminating in Kanu being sacked by another faction last year. In a statement signed by Comrade Peter Bassy, its Director of Media and Publicity, he said “pro-Biafra groups, irrespective of there status must be talking about unity of purpo...
Human Rights Writers Association of Nigeria, (HURIWA) has threatened to drag the Minister of Defence, Mansur Dan-Ali to International Criminal Court, ICC, over his comment on Anti-Grazing law. HURIWA said it will drag Dan-Ali to ICC if President Muhammadu Buhari fails to arrest his Minister. Dan-Ali had on Tuesday in a statement, called for the suspension of the implementation of the Anti-Grazing law. He said the suspension will reduce the tension in troubled states across the country. “There is a need for the Nigeria Police and Department of State Services to prosecute all the suspects arrested in the affected states while negotiating safe routes for the herders,” Dan-Ali had said. Reacting to the statement, HURIWA described the Minister’s call as “treasonable felony” In a statement by its national Coordinator, Emmanuel Onwubiko, HURIWA said the statement credited to the minister was the height of “irresponsibility and irrationality for a serving minister to ask states to susp...
Team News Maurizio Sarri doesn’t have a fully fit team at his disposal but he does have all of his first-team stars full fit. Only Ruben Loftus-Cheek, Davide Zappacosta, Marco Van Ginkel and Ethan Ampadu are out injured long-term. Formation: 4-3-3 Manager: Maurizio Sarri Kepa Arrizabalga (GK) The Spaniard is the world’s most expensive goalkeeper and has made his mark in England despite his antics in the EFL Cup final. Cesar Azpilicueta (RB) Chelsea’s consistent man, the Spaniard has played every game so far for the Blues and should continue that trend. David Luiz (CB) While he was ousted under Antonio Conte, the Brazilian has become a permanent fixture under Sarri, with 28 appearances to his name. Antonio Rudiger (CB) The German international did play in the international break but despite that, he should keep his place in the starting line-up. Emerson (LB) While Marcos Alonso is the first choice, the Spaniard hasn’t impressed this season and thus, this might give Emerson a chanc...
